MLK Day of Service at United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona

The Spirit of Service

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is unique among the other days that are automatically on our calendars, as it is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service. In the words of Coretta Scott King: “It’s a day to get involved in nonviolent action for social and economic progress. It’s a day of service.”

It is in this spirit that the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona celebrated and participated in our first annual MLK Day of Service on January 16th, 2023.

Leon Family

Cecele Leon and her family entered the Healthy Families program almost two years ago in hopes to turn things around for her and her family of four children. Healthy Families provides free, in-home services for new and expecting parents to help navigate the waters of parenthood. Cecele wanted a better future for her family and reached out for guidance and support from the program. Her whole family has been open and receptive at each of their scheduled home visits, applying the child development curriculum and doing their own research to help all the children succeed. Their home visitor said, “every time I visit them, I am constantly praising their impactful efforts in teaching their children empathy and showing limits with love.”
