Meet the Leon Family!
Cecele Leon and her family entered the Healthy Families program almost two years ago in hopes to turn things around for her and her family of four children. Healthy Families provides free, in-home services for new and expecting parents to help navigate the waters of parenthood. Cecele wanted a better future for her family and reached out for guidance and support from the program. Her whole family has been open and receptive at each of their scheduled home visits, applying the child development curriculum and doing their own research to help all the children succeed. Their home visitor said, “every time I visit them, I am constantly praising their impactful efforts in teaching their children empathy and showing limits with love.”
While there is much positivity within the Leon Household, things have not been easy. The Leon family went without a vehicle or reliable transportation for over a year causing major stress to the whole family. They tried for months to fix their broken-down car, spending money they couldn’t afford to spend and causing financial hardships and cutbacks on basic necessities like food, rent and back-to-school supplies. This is when United Way of Tucson stepped in to help find a solution.
Each year, United Way of Tucson’s community partner, GEICO, gifts a free car to a deserving family in need through their Recycled Rides Program. United Way of Tucson connected them with the Leon Family and shared their story with the representatives there. The people at GEICO were truly moved by their story of resilience and in February they were selected to receive a free car to help them navigate to a better life.
Now the Leon Family has a reliable car they can take their children to school in every day. Cecele and her family are also still enrolled in the Healthy Families program, supported by United Way of Tucson, that helps uplift them and connect them to their best possible future.
