Empowering Local Students: The Cradle to Career Partnership’s STEM Impact

Young students have not historically been encouraged to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers. United Way of Tucson’s Cradle to Career partnership aims to change this by providing resources, mentorship, and hands-on experiences to show these young people that STEM is not only accessible but can lead to meaningful, fulfilling careers.

Supporting Young Innovators: The Story of Burree and Joyce Lewis

In partnership with local programs like the Boys and Girls Clubs, United Way of Tucson’s Cradle to Career initiative has created opportunities for students like Burree and Joyce Lewis, who discovered their interests in engineering, electronics, and even veterinary science through the Up and Atom program. Burree, age 12, enjoys building and creating; she recently constructed a model greenhouse, complete with popsicle sticks and soldering work. Her younger sister, Joyce, used batteries and wiring to make a small fan-powered wind turbine, sparking her fascination with hands-on STEM projects.

The Role of Cradle to Career’s Up and Atom Program

The Up and Atom program is a pivotal part of Cradle to Career’s mission, developed to inspire young minds through collaboration with community STEM leaders. Program Manager Miles Chandler shares that this afterschool program aims to give young girls exposure to STEM skills, building their confidence and showing them a future filled with possibilities in STEM fields. Chandler describes the program’s approach as “hands-on learning and connections with the STEM industry,” providing students with early industry experience and exposure to successful women in STEM fields.

Creating Pathways and Possibilities

Engaging students at a young age with hands-on experience is key to bridging systemic gaps in STEM fields. These programs equip young students with the skills, confidence, and mentorship to explore career options previously deemed unreachable. Burree now envisions a future where she can be a vet, applying the precision and focus she learned in her STEM activities. Joyce similarly dreams big, inspired by the possibilities she’s seen.

Encouraging Inclusivity in STEM

Through Cradle to Career, United Way of Tucson is investing in more than just individual futures. By cultivating diverse talent, they contribute to an inclusive workforce that enhances innovation and addresses real-world problems with fresh perspectives.

“Whenever you have a dream,” Joyce says, “don’t let it take behind you. Just go for it.”
